Toeing The Tulip Line

All of the drivers and navigators who took part in yesterday's Layer Marney Cup rally were presented withcommemorative mugs designed by the sister-in-law of Sheila Charrington of Layer Marney Tower, the organiser and host of the event. My image shows the 2017, 2016 and 2015 mugs. They're, lovely to drink from, bone china by McLaggan Smith Mugs Ltd.

I've propped a copy of the Tulip Roadbook behind the mugs. I thought some blippers might not have come across this system of navigation and might be interested. The name of this type of navigation comes from the Tulip Rally, which first used it in the 1950s. Tulip, or ball and arrow instructions, are simple diagrams of the route junctions with the ball indicating where you come from and the arrow indicating where you are going to. Normally they are given in order. The Tulip Roadbook uses tulip symbols to detail a route, but provides additional information on distances, road signs etc. Shame that I, the navigator, was deep in conversation with the driver, missed a tulip cue and got us lost yesterday. The beautiful Essex village of Finchingfield was very busy with motorists, bikers and tourists and it was most embarrassing processing through the throng three times. :)

What's done is done but things change. It's never too late to make a fresh start.
