Did Santa Claus come to town?

On 9 May, 1241 a stone cross was found on the site of the Cross Kirk, now in the centre of Peebles.   Then,  an urn was found on the same site, and some decided that these were the cremated remains of St Nicholas. So the site became a favoured place of pilgrimage for those seeking miracles,  and Alexander III paid for the first church on the site.
That lasted through until the 1600's, when presumably the thinness of the pro-St Nicholas argument lost its attraction.
A very dreich day in Peebles, but then the Cross Kirk, in one form and another, must have seen a few of these across eight centuries.
