2017 Tuesday -- Captain Cass' House

This is the back entrance to one of the best known landmarks in our little town of Cayucos. We were walking the dogs this afternoon and turned to walk down the alley behind the Cass House; that's when I saw the sign in my photo.

in 1868 Captain James Cass came to Cayucos. His built a deep-water dock, a Victorian home, and a large warehouse, where butter and cheese could be stored until the steamships arrived. According to Dr. Dan Krieger, professor emeritus of history at Cal Poly, “In the late 1870s, San Luis Obispo County was a vastly productive dairy region; it was the number one dairy producing area in the entire world […] producing more than Denmark or the Netherlands.“ Cass’s wharf facilitated the storing and shipping of the dairy product, and therefore, caused Cayucos to become an active wharf, a center for commercial trading, and a home to families. Almost 150 years after Cass arrived, his pier, his warehouse, and his home stand as a tribute to his hard work and foresight.
