Carved pulpit at Stoke Gabriel

 Visited the church at Stoke Gabriel (St Mary and St Gabriel) looking for green men. There is a small one in the nave and a magnificent 15th Century pulpit, restored in 1931, decorated with fruit and vines. Not only
that but in the churchyard there is a yew tree about 800 or more years old. A traditional rhyme claims to provide a way in which wishes can be fulfilled:
                           "Walk ye backward round about me
                             seven times round for all to see;
                             Stumble not and then for certain
                             one true wish will come to thee.”
Also in the churchyard is the grave of Sir Fred Pontin, 1906-2000, holiday camp pioneer.
