Doors Open Day

Lovely weather again today, so a good day to go wandering round Leith checking out a number of historical buildings that were open for Doors Open Day. The following buildings were visited:

Smith's Place House, Smith's Place (just off Leith Walk)
Leith Theatre, Ferry Road
Leith Town Hall & Police Station, Queen Charlotte Street - check out Kryptomart's blip
Lamb's House, Burgess Street

Out of these 4 buildings, my favourite was Smith's Place House (my blip is of looking up the central stairwell) and here is some history:

The Georgian villa of James Smith, the merchant who laid out Smith's Place in 1814, has belonged to Raimes Clark & Co Ltd since 1835. It is the home to the Head Office of Lindsay & Gilmour Pharmacies and remains a very fine surviving example of a Leith merchant's house. It retains many of it's original features such as the oval central staircase, Adam fireplaces and the oldest surviving walled garden in Leith.

I hope everyone has had a good Sunday - off to the new office tomorrow, which I may blip tomorrow!
