In this case, Carbon. Or to be precise, West Coast 'rainbow' coal.

This macro is pretty much lifesize and it's amazing how much of the landscape of one single nugget was opened up through macro focusing. The colours, ridges and valleys seem to belong to something much larger than a couple of inches across.
