Mousehole /"Mowzel"
What a wonderful first day with TMLHereAndThere! I drove down to Penzance on the A30 - a detestable road in any season but summer is the worst! Luckily most of the hold ups were on the other side but it was a long journey! About 30 mins out I got a message from TML saying how about meeting in Marazion - did a change to my sat nav and it said 2 hours away - yikes! However on researching it was just 10 mins further on from Penzance! I had no idea where it was so imagine my delight when I saw St Michaels Mount as I descended through the picturesque seaside village! I had tom park in the alternative extra carpark and was just about to message TML when she messaged me! She was now back in Penzance! I suggested she got a taxi out to me which thankfully she did!
Well TML is everything I expected and more! Humorous, highly informed and intelligent and just lovely! We had lunch looking out to the Mount and watching the gazillion tourists make their way there by boat. By the time we had finished lunch the causeway out was totally covered by the sea, I will definitely be going back to photograph it at low tide and to visit the mount! But off season for sure! There were queues to get the ferries across and to enter the church - a long line of people I thought perhaps were trees at first!!
We had a lovely walk up through the village - so many Art galleries - I bought a little wooden colourful set of houses and 3 house magnets made of glass which looked just like boiled sweets! We also popped into a church with amazing windows and lots of tapestry kneelers!
We headed back to penzance to pick up Immy, TML's delightful daughter who had been doing a course at the Newlyn School of Art. We then headed for Mousehole - a place I have never been but always wanted to! I was not disappointed - such a beautiful little harbour but oh so narrow steep streets! We eventually found a parking space but I was fearful my handbrake would hold the car and gave the car a good nudge just to make sure! As we walked down to the harbour we found a shop that made fairies! All hanging from the ceiling with dragonflies too! I loved what I thought was a mobile - but it was the production line of fairies waiting to be painted and then another where they were waiting for their wings to be attached! I bought a fairy - of course! Anything with wings I love! We headed to the pub Immy wanted to eat in after walking along the harbour wall and seeing this delightful girl in her mouse hat - Immy said it was a wolf but I disagreed!
As we were in the pub we heard activity outside - I rushed out with my camera, jimmy close behind! It was a street procession to raise money for The Christmas harbour Lights! What a fabulous array of people in fancy dress! No obvious theme - just come as you like - mermaids, ducks, Princesses and of course Father Christmas and a very elderly Elf! The children on the table next to us were given light up bath ducks and their father showed them how by holding hands they could make a circuit to make the duck light up - I asked if we could join in so the 7 of us made a duck light up circuit!
Going home was a bit of a trial as I missed the A38 turn off so back up the A30 it was - then my phone went flat so Immy's sat nav to the rescue! Finally home and staying up to 2 in the morning chatting to TML! I realise that for all my days of solitude I certainly make up for it when I have someone to talk to!!
Marazion can be seen here and Mousehole tomorrow!
