Jane, taking a break

Jane and Shawn are painting and renovating their 19th-Century house in Southeast Portland, and they took a break from their labor when Sue and I popped in so she could say goodbye to them before she leaves for Ecuador. Jane and Shawn (see Extra) met and fell in love when they were fifteen. Now their son has moved out and their daughter is finishing high school, and they are entering a new phase of their lives together. We took them one perfect peach, talked about their house projects, and watched on Jane’s computer the trailer for a film we all want to see, called Neither Wolf nor Dog. It’s about the collaboration between a Native American elder and a white man he invites to help him tell his story, and the actor who plays the elder in the film is David Bald Eagle, who was 95 years old when the film was made. He died in 2016 but was able to see the completed film and said, “It’s the only film I’ve been in about my people that told the truth.” The film will be screened in local theatres while Sue is away.
