The way out .... was locked.

We briefly visited an elderly patient in hospital this afternoon, and followed someone into the Unit. When we tried to leave we found the exit doors were electronically locked as part of the safe management of patients, so we'd to return to the nurse's station for assistance - the staff had key fobs to open the doors. Good to know that the hospital was trying to reduce the risk of elderly patient absconding.
