At a book fair*  in Lewes Town Hall today. Lewes was at one time the home of Thomas Paine, but I couldn't get a clear view of any of the information panels round the walls because of the many stalls. Instead we have the restored lion which once hung outside the White Lion pub in Westgate St, Lewes which was preserved by well wishers when the pub was demolished in 1939 to make way for housing. Today there is a facsimile white lion sign hanging from the ancient wall near the site. Why this lion isn't white too is not explained.

* I spent £11 in total on a book on cricket, a Martin Amis book and one on Brighton (latter to be put away for a Christmas present).
