Abies Grandis (Grand Fir - Ardkinglas)

This remarkable and widely successful conifer was originally introduced by Scotsman William Douglas (1798-1834) from coastal western North America. This particular tree is thought to have originated from later seed introduced by John Jeffrey (b. 1826). In 1975, at an estimated age of 100 years this tree measured 185ft (56m) tall by 17ft (5.2m) in girth. This phenomenal growth rate eventually saw the Ardkinglas Grand Fir become the first tree within the British Isles to attain and pass 200ft (60m) in height. The tree later peaked at a height of 208ft (63.4m) and for an unrivalled period of 10 years it was recorded as the tallest of any species in Britain.
