The Salish Sea and Scattered Light
View on the ferry in the Straits of Georgia. On way to Tsawwassen just before 6 PM..that speck is a seaplane. Galiano Island on the smokey horizon.
Here's the thing about the color of the light... It's called Rayleigh Scattering. ( after an English scientist). The light from the sun contains all wavelengths in the spectrum and is essentially white. The shorter wavelengths are blue , the longer ones are red. Small particles in the air can scatter the incoming light into various directions And they scatter the shorter blues much more than the longer reds. ( why the sky is blue if you look in a directions other than the sun) If there are a LOT of particles , ( like this wildfire smoke!!) you get scattering on steroids. Blue purple green and yellow get scattered, leaving the Reds and oranges. So that is what we are seeing. Sunsets ( this is 3 hours plus before the sunset!). are red/orange because the light goes thru a greater distance of earths atmosphere. The almost full moon is strangely yellow tonight in Seattle where the smoke from the BC fires is expected for a few more days along with record temps and length of time without rain. .
Maple was very excited ( as were we!) to be reunited with her family! We did well I think to bring her home after 3 weeks with the 3 of us in one piece and healthy! She will be spoiled for space and freedom. Extra, in her small space in the loaded car!
Now that I'm back to reliable internet and hopefully some time with no visitors, I'm turning comments back on and will check in with the blippers I'm missing !! Thanks for your patience. And good night!
