Old Derby Station Clock
Derby used to have a nice old railway station. It doesn't any more. In the 1980s British Rail decided to demolish the fine old station in favour of a new one with no redeeming qualities at all.
The old station was designed by Francis Thompson, designer of the Midland Hotel and the Railway Village which featured in my blip on June 11th. All that remains of this building is the station clock which was saved and moved to its rather strange location against a wall in the station long stay car park.
The winged dragon-like creature above the clock is a wyvern. The Wyvern of Mercia was part of the crest of the Midlands Railway.
You can see the clock in its proper original location here.
