Thourghbred horses and Watermellon......
Williston has several large thoroughbred farms. Many mares foal here and the foals are raised until they go out to either the Ocala Breeders Sale or training for the race track. Two well known race horses came from Williston.... in 1975 one of these horses won the Kentucky Derby and went on to run a famous match race against the filly, Ruffian. That horse was Foolish Pleasure. He was the favorite for the Triple Crown that year but came up short.
The second horse, Always Dreaming, won the Kentucky Derby this year, 2017. He to, came up short in the Preakness but went on to win the Belmont. For such a very small town, thats a lot of horse power being bred, raised and sent to Ocala for training and history.
The middle mural is of watermelons. They are a favorite winter crop here with the farmers. Many of the watermelons that are enjoyed all over the US, come from Williston. They are planted in January and harvested to be shipped out for everyone to enjoy on Memorial Day. After that crop is harvested, the fields are plowed under, and peanuts are planted. But that is a story for another mural.
