Drying chili pepper
These ladies live in the landlord's/landlady's house, or in servants' quarters on the property. Some of them work as servants, and some or all are related to our landlord and landlady. It is hard for me to sort out who is related to whom. I think things work like this in many countries, where poorer relatives come to work at the houses of better off relatives, and it is (or can be) a win-win situation for both.
They are drying berbere chili peppers, which go into berbere sauce. Wikipedia says, "Berbere (Amharic: ???? berber?, Tigrinya: ???? berbere) is a spice mixture whose constituent elements usually include chili peppers, garlic, ginger, dried basil, korarima, rue, white and black pepper and fenugreek.[1][2] It serves as a key ingredient in the cuisines of Ethiopia and Eritrea." It's fairly spicy, although not the spiciest sauce that is made here. That is mitmita. I'm not sure if this is a day's, week's or month's supply of peppers. They definitely like spicy food.
