The strong wind in Holyrood Park prevented me from getting a clear photo of this flower covered rocky hillside with a skyline of Edinburgh in the distance.   Within a metre of me there were six different flowers but it was the Maiden Pink that I was most interested in.  Until recently there was only one known site remaining in the Lothians of the flower and that was in Holyrood Park. The Maiden Pink (Dianthus deltoides) is found in very few areas in the UK and is internationally classified as Near Threatened. So to prevent local extinction seed was collected and propagated then in 2013 it was planted in five sites in the park with plans to reintroduce it to other sites in Edinburgh where it was known to have grown in the past.
Despite being so close to the centre of Scotland's capital there is an abundance of fauna and flora in this wild park, except unfortunately I never saw any butterflies or moths today due to the very windy conditions.
