Slice of Life, Kitchen

Here's a corner of our kitchen, full of stories about the people who live here. Start with the apple/rhubarb pie made early his morning from the Gravensteins on the little tree out back. To the left we have jars of raspberry/chocolate/almond spread; not too sure what I think of this yet--even though it has all the food groups, I'm not sure they come together well enough to jump up and down about; we'll have to see when it cools. In the center is an Asian lily from a clump growing by the front gate; it is very perfumey and competes with the apple pie. Under the white towel sits a jar of sourdough starter; it appeared in this morning's waffles. There are stems of lavender drying in the brown paper bag, further left. The metal fish on the wall is from one of those gift exchanges where you draw numbers and can either choose a new gift or take one from someone else; I was very happy to be left with the fish and not the, um, vibrator. Hanging from the fish is an ornament from Bartlett's Tree Service, employer of Treekeeper. There are ripening pears high up on the window sill, two raku pots made at a friend's kiln party, a jar of nutritional yeast to sprinkle on the cats' food--we call it candy and they get very excited when mealtime rolls around. So we know there are cooks and gardeners and cat lovers who live here, people who make things and save things and accumulate random objects. People who like to eat. People who are tired from a long day, and who are about to cut into that pie.
