The Bane of Our Lives

This has been one of the wettest summers ever recorded in Ireland. It has been a bad year for butterflies with very few to be seen at all. Mercifully, it seems also to have been a bad year for house flies. However it has been a great time for slugs and snails. Slugs, like this one seen slithering across the wet dacking out back of the house, have been the bane of our lives this year. They have been multiplying like wildfire and have eaten almost everything of worth in the gardens. At first we wanted not to go overboard in killing them, not wanting to poison the birdlife as well but in the end we gave up pussyfooting around and resorted to nasty tactics. I am currently thinking of napalm!
