Red Chaenomeles Bud...

... or red flowering quince bud. Of the three different coloured chaenomeles bushes I have, this is the one that is the most spectacular in winter because of its bright red blossoms and it also produces the most quince fruits in autumn. The downside is that it's also incredibly spiky and could rip the unwary most mercilessly.
