Under The Floor

Our house was built in 1936, it is quite a bit older than we are. Unlike your typical 1930s house with their formula layout (that I rather like), ours is a one-off bespoke semi built for the school master on one side and the game keeper on the other side. All things considered it's a very nice house - we wouldn't have bought it otherwise - but lots of bad things have been done to it and we are having to live with some of the consequences and where we can fix them.

Tomorrow the plumber will start to install a modern boiler. This will take a lot of space in the kitchen that we'd rather not give up away but it's the best option given the space we have and the fact we can't gut the house while we are living in it.

Today we lifted some of the floor boards in the dining room in preparation for some of the plumbing work which will result in the radiators moving from where they are (external wall) to an internal wall. This blip was taken under the floor showing the slate damp proofing course visible, sleeper walls, floor joists and some of the plumbing.

Once the plumbing is done we are going to lag everything properly and then fully insulate the space under the boards, leaving the space right at the bottom open for ventilation.
