The kowhai

is a New Zealand native tree. There are eight species of kowhai, each have a different growth habit, leaves, flowers and flowering times.  This is the earliest flowering one that I know of and it also has the smallest leaves. Native birds, in particular the tui love the nectar from these flowers and often shred the flowers to pieces to reach it.  Great to see some bees out today as well (extra)
