Hot Water Springs - Nelum Wewa
Even though the hot water springs in Kinniya, Trincomalee (44 Celsius) is the most popular one in the island, hot water springs in Nelum Wewa is the hottest well. The temperature is at 62 Celsius. Like a boiling jug of water, bubbles keep coming to the surface from this well.
I couldn't resist myself from puting my hand into the well & feel the temperature. However, the pain was well worth the experience!
There're 7 springs at Nelumwewa (close to Dimbulagala temple) & they're of different temperatures.
These wells have a unique temperature for 2 different reasons. The tectonic plates of this world have very small cracks & the temperature rises to the top from these places. Or it could be for the reason that when the rain water goes in to the Earth's crust, the hot water that comes up to the surface from the bottom, is faster than the water that goes down & when that happens, the water doesn't get cooled off enough & in these places the water is extremely hot.
Whatever the reason is for their being, they're infact a very beautiful freak of nature!!
