War against English

The number plates here can be quite fascinating. This is on our hire car and refers to the 1812 war against the English in the fight for American Independence. During this war, the British burned most of the buildings in Washington, DC - including the White House and the Capitol building. No wonder the Americans still remember it.

This year was the bicentennial of the 1812 British visit!! Ironic that we are driving round in a car with this plate!! Or perhaps it was chosen 'specially for us!

Another number plate we saw had "1913 Delta Sigma Theta" signifying that this car probably belonged to a black university woman who had made her own way in life. The "Delta Sigma Theta" is a, primarily, black women's university sorority (sisterhood). This was the beginnings of the American suffragette movement.

There are no number plates on the front of the cars! We shall keep our eyes open for more plates with stories.
