Dartmouth, Devon

Our weekend visit in Devon continued today with a ride on a steam train from Brixham to Dartmouth. Actually, the train goes to Kingswear, (bottom right picture),and we took the foot ferry across the River Dart to Dartmouth. We wandered around this beautiful old town, looked in a few shops, and had lunch at The Singing Kettle.

We then decided to take a boat trip up the Dart to Greenway, Agatha Christie's home and now a National Trust property. The visit was fascinating, of course, and I took way too many pictures! Two to share - the picture on the wall on the right of the collage is Agatha as a child and the doll she is holding in the picture is the same one as is on the chair.

Then the bottom centre of the collage is a view of the library. During the war the house was occupied by the US Navy and one of the officers painted this beautiful mural along the top of all 4 walls. After the end of the war the Navy contacted Agatha Christie to arrange for it to be painted over (it was graffiti, after all!), but she insisted she wanted to keep it as it was part of history. Years later, once the house was open to the public, this same officer returned to the house and was shocked to find his mural still there! Lovely story!

The National Trust keeps a flat at the top of the house available to rent as a holiday flat. I must put that on my bucket list!
