reflective fly
...a bit strange waking up without the sights, sounds and smells of Toscana but, as we slowly unpacked and sorted ourselves out, there were enough Italian goodies to make the transition a little easier to bear.
A visit to the supermarket was an unfortunate necessity so we stopped of at Studland en route where there were plenty of, guess what, flies.
After some input from mollyblobs, I have returned to my original id that this is a species of Syrphid, which is a true fly, and can now positively identify her as a Melanostoma mellinum, thanks to Bastiaan at the world of Syrphidae. She is so metallic and reflective that you can even see me (despite the poor focusing) mirrored in her thorax...
