Douneside House Hotel

Today we visited the gardens of the Douneside House Hotel. The hotel is owned by the MacRobert Trust. Previously the MacRobert family owned the house, however their three sons were all killed, one in an aviation accident before the Second World War. The remaining two sons were in the RAF and were killed during the war.

I noticed this memorial (in the form of a Lancaster Bomber) in the garden in front of the hotel. There were some photographs of the sons taken while they were in the RAF inside the hotel.

The hotel is owned by the MacRobert Trust, and all profits are either reinvested in the estate or given to charity. The gardens and grounds are impressive, immaculate and beautifully maintained. The extra shows a view of the hotel itself. They were selling plants from the garden today and seemed to be doing a thriving business. Naturally we came away with a plant as they were very reasonably priced.

After today the hotel closes to the public for the next six weeks when it is reserved for servicemen, retired servicemen and their families.

We and they were very lucky with the weather today which was mostly warm and sunny.
