A light snack at midday..... ?
There seems to be no concept of small dishes in Serbian meals, but the quality of food in Belgrade ensures satisfied clients. These two salads are supposed to constitute be a light hors-d'oeuvre.
?
The question mark ? This pub has been standing for at least two centuries. Late in the 19th century the bishop of the church - actually a cathedral - across the road noticed that the pub's name was the Serbian equivalent of "near the church". The bishop was outraged when he discovered with horror that the pub was serving beer and other alcoholic drinks he insisted by letter that its name be changed. The publican wrote his response in the form of a simple question remark, and this was carried to the church (about 20 metres away.) No response has yet arrived, and the pub sign remains the quizzical question mark.
PS If you visit the ?, you will discover that the church is also interesting. And very close you will find the massive Kalemegdan fortress, which towers over the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. SEE MY SECOND PHOTO.
In the middle distance is the Danube shortly downstream of its meeting with the Sava. The Kalemegdan has been fought over for at least two thousand years, currently is a Belgrade's favourite leisure park.
