Vipera berus

The spaniel and I had a close encounter with an adder on our morning walk on the heathland. It was very well camouflaged against the ground and I didn't see it until I almost trod on it. Rapid back peddling and a quick photograph before it disappeared into the bracken. Dark colouring suggests it was female.
