Poor old John Jones
Finally the rain stopped, the sun came out, Mull was transformed and I have too many photos to choose from. The main picture is the grave of John Jones. The extras are the ruined village of Suidhe: abandoned in the 1940s after being occupied since at least the 1600s and proof the sun came out. This is my entry for derelict July but because I liked the story of John Jones and thought this good Samaritan should be remembered, his grave is the main post.
John Jones was a pedlar, who died on the 1st of April, 1891. His demise is a sad tale. In his role as pedlar he had called at two houses on the Ross of Mull. The inhabitants of these houses had contracted small pox and had been shunned by their neighbours. John, the travelling pedlar nursed them through their illness.
He resumed his rounds with his pack on his back and then found that he too had contracted small pox with an attack that was virulent that he died by the roadside. He was buried along with his pack on the spot where the body was found and cairn and cross built to mark the location
