Black tie
There is, I am happy to admit, some hypocrisy or, being generous to myself, inconsistency in my dislike of fancy dress - I mean, really, why?! - and the fact that I love a black tie do. I've heard people say that it's boring for the men, only the women get to dress up, but that absolutely misses all of the idiosyncrasies of the get up.
For a start, there's the cummerbund, the shirt, the cuffs, and, of course, the tie. I don't like to think of myself as a snob - but then I wonder how many snobs do? - but, honestly, why not learn to tie a bow tie? These pre-tied versions: you might as well buy shoes with pre-tied laces, for God's sake.
Anyway, I got all dressed up, this evening, and went down to the E3 Business Awards in Bolton. Despite having been a judge, I wasn't required to do anything other that sit next to my friend Andrew, drink wine, eat curry, and do a considerable amount of clapping. And I was happy with that :-)
