Moonshine Gulch

Today was a road ride day. We tried out a new road - the shoulders weren't great, but it is a road to nowhere. Unless you are going to the town at the end or heading to one of the hiking/atv/etc trails in the area, there is no reason to use the road. So, it was relatively empty, and it turned out to be a great ride. The final hill leading down into 'town' was excellent to decend - fast, smooth, empty and endless. My dad recommended stopping at Moonshine Gulch at the turnaround point, which we did - we certainly weren't ready to ride back UP that hill without proper fortification.

The Moonshine Gulch had a sign out front 'biker welcome' and I don't think they meant us. I would guess they don't get many spandex-clad visitors. The bar is ancient. The floor visibly slopes - in another few years they are going to need to warn people to prevent their beers from sliding off the table. We were expecting them to serve 'both kinds' (Bud and Bud Light) but were pleasantly surprised to see that they had a rather nice selection. Three beers and a basket of fries only ran us $12 (in cash, none of that new fangled plastic money here).

As expected the hill was a grind to climb back out. A vicious headwind ensured that we didn't do much coasting on the ride back. Another excellent day of vacation.
