The Deep

As a member of The Icelandic Film Academy I was invited with The Good Wife to see the film The Deep (djúpið) by Baltasar Kormákur - one of our best film directors. This is because we have to choose which film to send to the Oscar.
The film is based on a true story. A fishing boat from Vestmanna Islands sank and one man, Guðlaugur Friðþórsson, swam 5-6 km to land - four men drowned. This was March 11th in 1984.
I think I am a hard head when it comes to crying in a movie theater, but I cried like a baby and was not ashamed of it - this is the best film I have seen in a long time.

A few years after the accident I worked with a friend of mine, Páll Steingrímsson, on a documentary of this achievement and he got Guðlaugur to play himself in the film. Later Páll took this film of his "filmography".

I was an "extra" in Baltasar's film JAR CITY, but my back played quite a role as I sat back to back with the leading lady in a café. That film is based on novels by Arnaldur Indriðason, Mýrin. And while I remember, Baltasar is going to make another film by another book by Arnaldur and I am looking for a part.

The inserted pictures: JAR CITY, Baltasar Kormákur and on the bottom two scenes from the film and Guðlaugur as he looks to day.
