Open

I spent all day at the Scottish Open (golf!) at Dundonald Links.  Although I have been brought up on my dad's sports diet of golf and Rangers, I have never been to a tournament.

So we trooped off to Ayrshire, led by my sister who is a seasoned veteran at going to tournaments.  We survived calm weather, periodic cloudy sunshine, bitter raw sea breezes, hot sunshine, spits of rain....and for the final hour of the day the most epic swarm of midges I have ever encountered. Midges should be used by the government to extract secrets from criminals....horrendous torture.  Particularly tricky to manage as you stand stock still waiting on a player to make their drive down the 18th. Try standing still and silent for 1 minute while a cloud of the midges attack you...not easy!

But apart from that it was fantastic. Saw all my favourite players up close. Spent lovely family time together, got lots of fresh air and had lots of laughs.

*At one point we spotted a space on a grassy slope at a good green. So between pairings coming through, as scrambled up and quickly got still again for the next players shots. What we didn't know was that this slope had no where to wedge our bums or feet...it was smooth long grass, like an ice slope. Cue us hanging on for dear life to large bunches of grass for five minutes to stop all three of us sliding down the slope into the people below us. Not helped by us having to hold full pints of beer, and the grass being full of large nettles and thistles. Much hilarity as we then rescued ourselves, then watched dozens of people do the same thing after us.

Wish I could go back the rest of the weekend!
