Undoing Racism

“Race is a specious classification of human beings created by Europeans (whites) which assigns human worth and social status using ‘white’ as the model of humanity and the height of human achievement, for the purpose of establishing and maintaining privilege and power.” --Ron Chisom and Michael Washington, in Undoing Racism (1997).

Sue and I are enrolled in a three-day "Undoing Racism" workshop created by The People's Institute for Survival and Beyond, facilitated by three trainers for each group of thirty participants. The first day of the workshop ends with the definition of "Race" developed by Chisom and Washington, based on the work of Dr. James Dunn. It makes perfect sense. I attended an early form of this workshop back in 1999, when it was still being tweaked and polished. Now it has come into its full expression, and it is a way to see clearly just how crucial racism is to the history of the country we live in, and how very cleverly people of European descent have engineered a means to perpetuate their privilege.

Sorry, I have no time for comments or responses till this workshop ends.
