Wind pump at NT Wicken Fen

Met up with daughter Claire today and we had a bit of a look around at Wicken Fen... (We also had lunch at Mcdonalds)

It was a bit overcast at times and also quite crowded, nice to see so many people enjoying the place.

I've photographed this wind pump many times without looking at the 'works'. Today the little door was open and I was amazed to see that the water was raised by a turbine working in a trough that pushed the water up from the lower level. I had always assumed that the sails drove some sort of lift pump.

The extra is a photo of the Fensman's Cottage, very picturesque now, but I guess that years ago it was cold, dark and damp!
