Carrie (Wednesday 12th July 2017)

It has been two years since I last blipped C's cat Carrie, who was sunning herself in her back garden and opened her eyes just long enough for me to get this shot. C. had just been renovating her pond. I might have blipped her crocosmia had I not blipped some in Calne's Town Gardens just a few days ago.

Yoko Ono featuring the Flaming Lips - Cambridge 1969/2007 (2007)
Having just read a review of the Yoko Ono album of remixes Yes, I'm A Witch I turned to Spotify to listen to this remix of an improvised performance at a concert entitled Natural Music that took place on 2 March 1969 and on which Yoko was accompanied by John Lennon:
   "With tentative plans for The Beatles' return to live performance put on indefinite hold, fans of the group lived in hope that they'd one day see their idols perform once again. On this day John Lennon gave the first concert performance any of The Beatles had given away from the group, with an appearance at Cambridge University.
   "Five hundred people watched the show, which took place at Lady Mitchell Hall. Named Natural Music, it was promoted by poet and percussionist Anthony Barnett.
   "Barnett had invited Yoko Ono to attend, and must have been delighted when she brought Lennon as her backing musician. However, unlike the carefully crafted pop of The Beatles, what audiences heard was a half-hour freeform duet featuring vocals and guitar.
   "Lennon remained towards the back of the stage, coaxing feedback and atonal noises from his Epiphone Casino guitar while Ono howled and shrieked into a microphone. Two other musicians also joined in halfway through the piece: John Stevens on percussion and piano, and saxophonist John Tchicai.
   "The piece was recorded in stereo and was released later in the year as Cambridge 1969, one side of Unfinished Music No 2: Life With The Lions. Mal Evans was credited with playing the "watch" on the recording, although he made no audible contribution." - The Beatles Bible
In his Mojo review, Mark Paytress wrote, "Just take a listen to what the Flaming Lips have done to Cambridge 1969, Ono's screamathon recorded live in front of an audience of Cambridge undergraduates. 'Um, this is a piece called Cambridge 1969,' it begins just as the original recording does. But there any similarity ends. The brief howl of Day Tripper-like feedback that once gave the cue for 26 minutes of free-form cacophony is cut dead by the kind of maddening drum rhythm that Frank Zappa once used to dive acid-trippers to the outer limits of sanity on Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet back in 1966. With a lo-fi funked-up bassline further anchoring the track, and an atonal sax sample clowning throughout, Yoko's ear-splitting primal scream is for once reduced to background chatter. In spite of all this, the retitled Cambridge 1969/2007 manages to sound at least as chaotic as the original, and infinitely more playable." Well, quite.
