Visit to Rochester Guildhall.
This was the Martello Tower museum's annual outing...... to another museum of course. A talk was arranged by one of the museum professionals, who told us about the mammoth task of researching, identifying, categorising, entering on a data-base, and storing the many items that have been given to the museum or collected over the decades.
This is Sir Cloudesley Shovell , a Rochester MP for many years and a huge benefactor of the town. He died, along with 2000 men in a
shipping disaster off the Scilly Isles. The accident was probably due to a longitude miscalculation, although it was not until 7 years later that the Longitude Act was passed. See link for more info.
I spent many a happy hour in the Ship and Shovell pub in Craven Passage near where I worked in John Adam St, central London.
