The Pentland Hills
From the southern suburbs of Edinburgh, a 20 mile chain of hills stretches on - forming a very beautiful country park area.
There is evidence of pre-historic settlement; a royal legend about a deer hunt; an old parish church drowned beneath the waves of a reservoir; the site of a battle on 28 November 1616 when Tam Dalyell of The Binns commanded a force of the Royal Scottish Army and cruelly defeated a much smaller band of Covenanters. Today's Army has large areas of the hills available to it as firing ranges.
It is a very popular walking area with the people of the city and others.
