Dayton Air Show
Sunday
A somewhat disappointing day at the Dayton Air Show today. We left a little later than we meant to, then once we left the interstate we got stuck in a long line of traffic. Part of the problem was that due to all the rain we had come through on Friday, the fields they usually use for parking across from the main entrance were too wet, so the only parking they were using was a tarmac lot right over the other side of the airport. Having finally got there, we then had to wait in line for the shuttle buses, so by the time we finally got there, the air display was already under way. We had been looking forward to the final display by the Air Force Thunderbird team... but it never happened! Apparently there was an incident on Friday, when one of the pilots, not one of the regular team, but the one that does the commentary, took a plane up for a sort of reconnaissance flight. He landed OK, but then somehow went off the runway, and the plane ended up on its roof. The pilot and his passenger were trapped for quite while before they could free them. They were both taken to hospital, though fortunately not seriously hurt. Initially they cancelled the Saturday display, but ultimately cancelled both performances. Unfortunately, we hadn't had the local news on over the weekend, so we weren't aware of this! Still, as you can see from my collage, there were other great displays, so it was a good afternoon in unusually pleasant temperatures - usually when we have been in the past, temperatures have been in the 90'sF, today it was a delightful low 70s!
