Life through the lens...

By ValC

Bee and bugs.

When I took this photo I didn't see all the little black bugs lurking in this thistle flower.
I hope someone on blip can tell me what they are. It was the bee and hover flies I noticed.

Spent a lovely hot summers day at one of our favourite Yorkshire Wildlife Reserves.      Brockerdale. A few miles North of Doncaster, and just off the A1. (see map)
As with most of their reserves a hidden gem.

Took loads of photos.
Unfortunately, as everything is so far advanced this year, the orchids were over, and there were no marbled white butterflies.
See blip 2015
However there was still plenty to see, and such a variety of wild flowers,
including:
Lady's Bedstraw
Bellflowers
Meadow Crane's Bill
Bush vetch
Common mallow
Pink bindweed
Field scabious
Thistle
Purple-loosestrife
Meadow sweet
Wild thyme
Marjoram
Creeping cinquefoil
Agrimony

A lot of small brown butterflies. Gatekeppers, and commas, a few red admirals.
I met a lady who was looking for Dark Green Fritillaries, but we didn't see any. She said a friend had counted 80 a few weeks ago!

About three quarters of the way round passed the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Kirk Smeaton, and so called in for a refreshing shandy.
As it was Sunday they had some tasty " nibbles" on the bar, which I had to partake in. Well it was rude not to.The pork pies were delicious!

I have put a collage of some more photos on as an extra.
As usual it was difficult choosing just one photo for blip.

Hope you have all had a great weekend, and I hope this summer weather is here to stay for a while.
