The Mull railway, out of use

We sailed on the early morning ferry from Barra to Oban and almost immediately (just enough time for a tasty fish lunch from the shack on Oban pier) jumped on the ferry to Mull. We'd never been to the island and were not sure what to expect, but it sounded promising. The campsite at Craignure is right by the ferry terminal so it was only a quick pedal before we were there. We chose a pitch with a view down the Great Glen, although Ben Nevis wasn't in view tonight. There were rabbits everywhere. The tent pitches were felt material on top of concrete bases - not brilliant for banging in pegs. This caused quite a furrowed brow on Fred and a few bent pegs. I can see the logic of the concrete pitches (no nasty patches of yellowed grass), but I'm not sure if the tent's safe in a gale.

We enjoyed a lovely walk by the shore and I even saw a nut-brown hare, which was a real highlight. We discovered the Mull railway, which is now out of use. You could see that people had put a lot of love into its creation. We walked along the rails in the midst of foxgloves back to the campsite. That evening there was a party in one of the Sheiling tents - something to do with football. We didn't pay much attention.
