... in lower Manhattan, on my way to the new ICP (International Center of Photography) on the Bowery. My objective was a wonderful exhibition entitled Magnum Manifesto, commemorating the 70 anniversary of the photo agency Magnum Photos created by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and others in 1947. The ICP itself was founded in 1974 by Cornell Capa, Robert's brother--so my visit today was a kind of pilgrimage to the fountainhead of of politically and culturally concerned photography in the 20th century. The show is ingeniously displayed in numerous distinct sections; it includes "over two hundred prints as well as books, magazines, videos, and rarely before seen archival documents." The catalog is excellent--though far too heavy to schlep back to Northampton, so I'll order it later. The exhibition closes 3 September--if you're in the area do not miss it :) We had dinner with our friends Jane and Marty. Posted next morning.
