White Admiral

Another morning spent surveying, this time at the southern end of Castor Hanglands, covering both the NNR and the Forestry Commission woodlands to either side, which are equally biodiverse. The gloriously hot and sunny weather meant that the butterflies were again profuse, and this bramble bush was providing a valuable nectar source, much frequented by both White Admiral and Silver-washed Fritillary butterflies (see extra).

By the time we'd finished at just before 3pm, Pete and I were in dire need of refreshment. Fortunately the Langdyke Trust had organised a picnic on the NNR, and we were treated to beer and Pimm's, and bought two very filling picnic rolls, crammed with ham and salad, and a rather wicked pair of scones, jam and cream. It was a very good social event, although I ended up feeling rather faint - a combination of many hours in the heat followed by food and drink. Luckily, after sitting down on the grass, the feeling soon passed. All in all, a lovely summer weekend.
