Purakaunui Falls
A different day today because parts of it were more familiar. We left Invercargill this morning and drove the southern coast roads around the Catlins. You can't see it all in a day so we picked two places to explore. The light house at Waipapa Point was built in 1884 and is a beautiful timber structure. Extra 1 is a view of the coast line at Tautuku Beach so you can see the empty and wild nature of the place. Today was a kind day with a little breeze but I think it can be dramatic. When not at the coast the road goes through green pastures with sheep and cattle. There are areas of native trees left and they reminded us of North Island forests. The other place we targeted was the Purakaunui Falls. They are reached by a gentle walk through mature silver beech forest. The viewing platform is straight in front of the falls. How convenient for a photographer. I didn't go for subtle today. I wanted maximum blur. Last stop was at Owaka for coffee and I think they are winning in the Southland cheese roll taste test that I am conducting.
