Newby Hall

As usual ,on a visit like this, one photo wouldn't do, so another collage for today's blip.

We made the most of another beautiful day, and decided to visit one of our favourite Yorkshire houses and gardens.
We first came here in the early 1960's with my parents. It was a favourite of there's too.

Designed by Sir Christopher Wren with some of Britains finest Robert Adam interiors, Newby Hall is home to a wonderful collection of Chippendale furniture,Gobelins tapestry and classical statuary.
25 acres of award winning gardens, and one of Europe's largest double herbaceous borders which stretches down to the river Ure.
Also woodland walks, a miniature railway, and adventure playground.
A very nice restaurant where we have a cream tea, sat out on the terrace in the sun!

We had a guided tour of the house, which is still the family home of the Compton
family whose ancestors have lived here since 1784.

One of the most amazing rooms is the Tapestry Room.
Adam created a drawing room specifally for William Weddell's set of Gobelins tapestries which he orderd in Paris in 1763.They took 4 years to make, and are the only set remaining in its entirety in the setting for which it was made.

The entire room was completed in 1776. The English Axminster carpet (still looking good!) and ceiling were both designed by Adam, and Thomas Chippendale was commissioned to provide the sofas and chairs, designed to fit around the room under the tapestries.
The chair covers were also woven at the Gobelins factory,and they are the only pieces of Chippendale furniture known to have their original upholstery and covers.
It is truly beautiful.

Celia Fiennes in 1697 Said"This was the finest house I saw in Yorkshire".

I think this is true today.
