Pastures New
Our golfing triumvirate had an away day today at Long Sutton Golf Club, with another old friend and former teaching colleague who is a past Captain of the Club.
We had a very enjoyable and sociable round on what is a challenging course. This is taken on the tee of the par 3 17th hole; as you can see it involves a steep descent to a postage stamp green- I managed to find the right hand bunker with my tee shot, of course! Actually, we all managed to play quite well and it was a pleasure to play a different course.
On a far less pleasant slant on "pastures new", I got home to find that our son Chris, along with the rest of his department and a number of colleagues from other ones, had been told that his job was going in the latest round of redundancies at his firm.
He'd suspected this might happen, despite all of them being assured in the previous round of redundancies that their jobs were safe. Basically, their departments responsibilities are being transferred to offices in Singapore and China.
The only bright spot is that where some people were, quite literally, shown the door immediately as all the others had been previously, he was told that he could continue in his current post until the end of August and given a list of vacancies within the company that he "might like to apply for".
Given that he's just bought his first flat and taken on a mortgage, we're keeping our fingers crossed that he gets one of them.
Happy Independence Day to all you USA blippers! Had this as an ear worm all day:
