...Alleygater!!

There are gates on the alley behind the house. The idea was that they would increase security, help stop vandalism and graffiti, create a pleasant communal space that everyone would take a pride in, etc. etc. Our alley is part of a complex that has at least four exits on different streets, bin men who often leave a fair proportion of bin contents on the ground rather than in the truck as well as small businesses with lock-ups and people who come and go all the time and don't shut the gates so it doesn't really work.

But when the gates are shut they cast great shadows in strong light like we had today.

Which politician or trade unionist back in the 70s or 80s said: "I've heard allegations, and I'd like to find the allegators..."? I can't remember.
