Pictorial blethers

Camargue cowboys ...

Only some of them were women. They were parading up and down the main street in Arles in the hour before the bull run, when three bulls were corralled by the riders in the middle of their formation and then galloped down the road a full tilt. They did this about 10 times, and as they passed young men, and later boys, darted out and tried to catch the bulls. By the last run, they were going more slowly and a group of boys actually wrestled the bull to a halt by hanging on its horns and tail.

Earlier, one bull escaped the horses just opposite where I was standing, and there was a dramatic moment as two riders wheeled out of the formation to recapture it. It was all very fast and very exciting, in an entirely primitive way.
