Quite A Pair
Can you tell the female Gambel's quail from the male? You would be surprised how many people living in these parts can't. The differences are quite striking when you see them next to each other. The male is much more colorful with a larger topknot. A brighter male is very much like hummingbirds and many other species of birds in that respect.
I'm very disappointed that I haven't seen any babies scampering around yet this summer. I would have thought there would have been at least one brood out to this point since the incubation period is twenty-one days. Surprisingly, I've seen more roadrunners this year than most. Unfortunately, I haven't had a camera with me on any of those occasions. Maybe I'm fated to see them instead of the cute little guys.
I got a chuckle out of Beth this morning. She's been on vacation all month in Colorado and was able to come over to clean today. They drove back earlier than expected because it got over 100° while they were there. Ha! And they thought they would escape the hottest month of our year. Of course, they missed our 115+ days so I probably shouldn't have laughed so hard. It's good to have her back.
