Daggers

These flies have amazingly long proboscides, not only for sucking up nectar but also the odd passing insect too.  If I've got the ID right, as an orange-thighed empis livida, the ladies are quite particular, refusing any man that doesn't present the gift of a dead insect as a love offering prior to mating.  Go girl!

(Since discovered the males try it on with fake presents!)
